Thomas Adès

  • Adès: Anthology is released on EMI on October 18 and available for pre-order on Amazon now. The album includes Arcadiana, America: A Prophecy, Chamber Symphony, Paraphrase on Powder Her Face, Living Toys, Piano Quintet, These Premises Are Alarmed, Three Mazurkas, Violin Concerto and more.
  • Adès leads the Orchestra of São Paulo through a program of his works on November 17, 18, 19 including Asyla, Concerto for Violin, Tevot.
  • Houston’s Opera Vista produces Powder Her Face at Zilkha Hall, November 10 and 11.

Gerald Barry

  • The Importance of Being Earnest receives its European premiere with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, conducted by Thomas Adès at London’s Barbican Center on April 26.
  • >The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra led by Thomas Zehetmair presents Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions on March 30.

Luke Bedford

  • Self-Assembly Composition No. I, for ensemble, is performed as part of the Da Capo Chamber Players’ Cool Britannia program at Bard College on October 7, and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City October 10.

Alban Berg

  • World premiere of Lulu in a new chamber orchestra arrangement by Eberhard Kloke on May 12 at the Stadttheater Giessen, Germany.

Hector Berlioz

  • Opera Boston presents Beatrice & Benedict using Hugh MacDonald's edition published by Bärenreiter on October 21, 23 and 25, directed by David Kneuss and conducted by Gil Rose.

Friedrich Cerha

  • Paraphrase über den Anfang der 9. Symphonie von Beethoven, for orchestra, premieres on October 6 with the Gewandhausorchester, conducted by Riccardo Chailly in Leipzig.

Chaya Czernowin

  • You My Mother is presented as part of Yarn/Wire’s Chamber Opera Project on February 2-19 at La MaMa in New York City in collaboration with The Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf.

Carl Davis

  • US premiere of Davis’ complete score to Abel Gance’s classic silent film Napoleon, and world premiere of the restored film by Kevin Brownlow, conducted by Davis. There will be four performances from March 24 through April 1 at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.
  • World premiere of Davis' score to the 1920 Harold Lloyd film High and Dizzy with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the composer.

George Gershwin

  • Gershwin performances abound this season, with dates already scheduled at Rice University, the Richmond Symphony, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony and more. Jonny Greenwood

  • smear, for two ondes martenots and chamber ensemble, in US premiere on October 17 at Miller Theatre’s Sonic Festival. The performance features the Either/Or Ensemble led by Richard Carrick.
  • Doghouse receives US performance at Alabama Symphony Orchestra on November 19, conducted by Steve Hackman
  • Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, conducted by Edwin Outwater, releases the premiere recording of Popcorn Superhet Receiver this season. Further details TBA.

Handel

  • The 2004 Stephen Wadsworth production of Rodelinda is revived at The Metropolitan Opera, featuring Renée Fleming and conducted by Harry Bicket. Eight performances of Rodelinda in Andrew V. Jones's critical edition published by Bärenreiter run from November 14 through December 10.

Hans Werner Henze

  • Elegy for Young Lovers sees Philadelphia premiere at the Curtis Institute Opera Theatre, in association with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Kimmel Center Presents, March 14, 16 and 18. George Manahan, conductor, Chas Rader-Shieber, stage director.

Matthew Hindson

  • Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and conductor Edwin Outwater perform Canadian premiere of Homage toMetallica on March 29, 30.
  • Violin Concerto is given West Coast premiere by Lara St. John and the New West Symphony led by Sarah Ioannides on November 11.
  • The Musique 21 Orchestra of Michigan State University performs the US premiere of Technologic 145 on October 14.

Leoš Janáček

  • The Makropulos Case returns to The Metropolitan Opera with five performances from April 27 through May 11. Production by Elijah Moshinsky, conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek and featuring Karita Mattila.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold

  • James Ehnes joins the Pasadena Symphony in a performance of Korngold's Violin Concerto on October 29, conducted by Mei-Ann Chen.
  • The Detroit Symphony Orchestra presents Korngold's Cello Concerto on May 3, 4 and 6, led by Leonard Slatkin and featuring Fred Zlotkin.
  • Alan Gilbert leads the New York Philharmonic with Leonidas Kavakos in the Violin Concerto on June 14, 15 and 16.

Franz Lehár

  • The Merry Widow sees three performances at >Tulsa Ballet on September 23, 24 and 25, with choreography by Ronald Hynd. The performance marks the Oklahoma premiere of The Merry Widow.

Fred Lerdahl

  • In October, Bridge Records releases The Music of Fred Lardahl, Vol. 3: The String Quartets
  • Yarn/Wire presents Lerdahl’s Quiet Music for two pianos on October 6 at the Southampton Cultural Center (NY) and the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City, marking the work’s New York City debut.
  • Duo for Violin and Piano sees West Coast premiere by the Empyrean Ensemble at University of California-Davis, on November 19.
  • The Daedalus Quartet performs all three string quartets for the first time as a full evening-length concert on May 11 at Pro Musica in Detroit, with a follow-up performance in October, 2012 at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Peter Maxwell Davies

  • Proverb for orchestra receives US premiere with Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia on October 22.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Los Angeles Opera presents Cosi fan tutte in the Bärenreiter Critical Edition by Faye Ferguson and Wolfgang Rehm beginning September 18 with six performances through October 8. James Conlon conducts and Ashley Dean directs Nicholas Hytner’s production.

    Matthias Pintscher

    • Uriel, for cello and piano, premieres on September 16 at the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival with Alisa Weilerstein and Matan Porat.
    • Study II for Treatise on the Veil, for string quartet, in performance on October 26 by the East Coast Contemporary Ensemble at Harvard University.
    • Pintscher leads The Juilliard Orchestra through Osiris on November 5 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
    • Ensemble Modern performs celestial object I, for solo trumpet and ensemble, in Frankfurt on November 27, conducted by Matthias Pintscher.
    • towards Osiris, for orchestra, in performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Ann Arbor (December 6) and Carnegie Hall (December 7), led by Vladimir Jurowski.
    • songs from Solomon’s garden, for baritone and chamber orchestra, is performed by ensemble intercontemporain at Festival d'automne-Cité de la Musique in Paris on December 15, featuring soloist Leigh Melrose with Matthias Pintscher conducting.

    Arvo Pärt

    • The music of Arvo Pärt is featured as part of the Guggenheim Museum’s stillspottingnyc, September 15-18 and 22-25.

    Rossini

    • Santa Fe Opera presents a new production of Maometto II in Hans Schevellis' critical edition published by Bärenreiter in their 2012 season, directed by David Alden.

    Nino Rota

    • Riccardo Muti leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through Suite from The Leopard on the CSO’s opening concert on September 23.
    • The Italian Academy at Columbia University honor the composer’s centenary on November 19 with a concert of chamber works performed by Emanuele Arciuli, David Fulmer, Chris Gross, Fiona Kelly and Carol McGonnell.

    Robert Sirota

    • October 5 sees the New York premiere of Sirota's cantata for nine singers and ensemble Holy Women: Lives of the Women Saints in the Stained Glass Window of St. Bede's Chapel. The performance is held at Corpus Christi Church in New York City.
    • Symphony No. 1: 212, the composer's homage to New York City, is performed by the Greater Bridgeport Symphony under Gustav Meier on October 15.
    • Victoria Sirota premieres a new work for organ on May 2 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The performance commemorates the 30th anniversary of the installation of the historic Appleton Organ at the Met.
    • The Clever Mistress, a chamber opera in one act, is presented on the Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival at Symphony Space in New York on April 23 and 30.
    • Iscariot, an opera in two acts, premieres on May 25, 26 and 27 at the Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City. The performance features the Trinity Choir with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, conducted and directed by Julian Wachner.

      • Cuerpos robados for violin and orchestra in world premiere, September 8 at the Klangspuren Schwaz Tirol Festival. Franck Ollu leads the Tiroler Symphonie Orchester Innsbruck, featuring soloist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.

      • Death and Resurrection, for string orchestra, receives US premiere at the Boston Conservatory conducted by Andrew Mark on February 2.

      Rufus Wainwright

      • New York City Opera presents the New York premiere of Wainwright’s Prima Donna, with four performances at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House from February 19 through 25. Directed by Tim Albery, conducted by Jayce Ogren and starring Melody Moore.

      Kurt Weill

      • In a co-production between The Opera Group and the Young Vic, the 2008 production of Street Scene that won the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical is revived, kicking off at the Young Vic with further performances around the UK and Austria. John Fulljames, director; Keith Lockhart conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Young Vic in London (September 15-20) and Theater an der Wien in Vienna (September 25, 26); Tim Murray conducts the Southbank Sinfonia in Basingstoke (October 3, 4), Edinburgh (October 6-8), Newport (October 10-12), and Hull (October 13-15).
      • Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival presents The Threepenny Opera performed by the Berliner Ensemble on October 4 through 8. Robert Wilson, director; Hans-Jörn Brandenburg, Stefan Rager, music directors.
      • Co-production of Lost in the Stars with Cape Town Opera and Glimmerglass Festival. Cape Town, South Africa: Tazewell Thompson, director; Albert Horne, conductor, November 24-27.       • Israeli Opera presents Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny directed byOmri Nitzan, conducted by David Stern, January 12-29.
      • Vienna State Opera presents Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, January 24 through February 5. Jérôme Deschamps, director; Ingo Metzmacher, conductor. Cast includes Elisabeth Kulman as Leokadja Begbick; Tomasz Konieczny as Trinity Moses; Angelika Kirchschlager as Jenny Hill; and Christopher Ventris as Jim Mahoney.

      • Violin Concerto premieres with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra on February 12 as part of Wigglesworth's composer residency during the 2011/12 season.

      • Seattle Symphony and Maestro Ludovic Morlot present Dupree’s Paradise on September 22.
      • Steven Sloane and the Bochum Symphony Orchestra present Zappa’s The Adventures of Greggery Peccary on October 20 at the Philharmonie Essen, Germany.
      • The Columbus State University Contemporary Ensemble presents Be-Bop Tango on November 16, conducted by Paul Hostetter. The Kansas State University Wind Ensemble, led by Dr. Frank Tracz, presents The Dog Breath Variations for wind ensemble and rock band on October 19.
      • Anthony Weeden leads a performance of The Dog Breath Variations and Envelopes on November 30 at the Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance, Blackheath, UK.

      Ellen Taafe Zwilich

      • Zwilich’s Concerto Grosso highlights the repertoire lineup of the third annual Conductors Workshop of Yakima, Washington, which takes place October 12 through 16.
      • Quintet for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Contrabass, (available from Presser Music) premiered in August, 2011 by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Michael Tree and Harold Robinson, sees further performances this season around the US including the Chamber Music Society of Detroit (September 17), Philadelphia Chamber Music Society (October 19), Carnegie Hall (November 29), the Kennedy Center (February 14), the Philharmonic Society of Orange County (February 23) and many more.
