Bernard Rands and Joseph Schwantner Featured on All-Star Orchestra Broadcast

The music of Joseph Schwantner and Bernard Rands is featured this month on the All-Star Orchestra’s public television series, which pairs beloved masterworks of the symphonic repertoire with contemporary pieces – “the masterpieces of the future.” The orchestra’s music director, Gerard Schwarz, leads the performances.

Episode #6, The Living Art Form, features Schwantner’s The Poet’s Hour – Soliloquy for Violin and Strings, in a program that focuses on the interaction between the orchestra and the soloist. Gerard Schwarz led the 2010 world premiere of The Poet’s Hour, which was commissioned by Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Schwantner describes the work as “essentially lyrical and elegiac.” The episode airs on October 9th and features violinist Yevgeny Kutik as soloist.

Episode #8, Mahler: Love, Sorrow and Transcendence, showcases Bernard Rands’s Adieu. The program, which airs on October 26, deals with themes expressed in Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder and Totenfeier (from Symphony No. 2): love, nature, otherworldliness, and the premonition of death. A parallel can be drawn between the spirit of these works and that of Rands’s, which is scored for brass quintet and string orchestra. Adieu received its premiere in 2010 by Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.  

Both episodes feature interviews and commentary with the composer and the performers.
