Portrait of Gerald Barry with Array Music and the World Premiere of <em>HUMILIATED AND INSULTED</em>

On November 4, Gerald Barry travels to Toronto for a portrait concert with Array Music, titled “Gerald Barry Returns”, featuring the world premiere of his new work for solo piano, HUMILIATED AND INSULTED. A reference to Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel of the same name, the work receives its premiere by pianist Stephen Clarke.

“Barry Returns” refers to the composer’s first trip to Toronto in 1993, when Array Music commissioned and premiered his Sextet on a program titled “Gerald Barry Comes to Town.” The portrait concert on November 4 also features Barry’s Le Vieux Sourd, for solo piano, Low for clarinet and piano, along with the ensemble’s reprise of the newly edited Sextet.

Le Vieux Sourd (or “the old deaf one”) is a reference to Claude Debussy’s nickname for Beethoven. Barry’s work – a setting of Auld Lang Syne, which Beethoven also arranged – was premiered by Gloria Cheng in 2008. The revised version, which appears in part at the opening of Barry’s recent opera The Importance of Being Earnest, received its first performance by the composer in 2010.
