2013 Gramophone Awards Honor Works by Peter Eötvös, Henri Dutilleux, and György Ligeti

The Gramophone 2013 Classical Music Awards have been announced and winning recordings include works by Henri Dutilleux, György Ligeti, and Peter Eötvös. Now in its 90th year, Gramophone honors noteworthy discs ranging from early music to opera and contemporary music.

The prize for "Best Contemporary Recording" has been awarded to Deutsche Grammophon’s release of Henri Dutilleux’s Correspondances for soprano and orchestra. The recording, which features soprano Barbara Hannigan, with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Orchestra Philharmonique de Radio France, also includes recordings of Tout un monde lointain for cello and orchestra with cellist Anssi Karttunen as well as The Shadows of Time.

Of the recording, Gramophone notes:

Barbara Hannigan has made the music very much her own and the nonagenarian composer has written a new, suitably stratospheric ending for her, as magical as one might have hoped... A believer in the cross-fertilisation of the arts, seeking ‘correspondences’ between the different senses, Dutilleux’s recent works keep any number of conceptual and stylistic balls in the night air, reflecting a lifetime’s experience.

This year’s winner in the “concerto” category is French-label Naïve’s recording of three works by Hungarian-born composers, featuring violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja with Ensemble Modern and the Hessen Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Peter Eötvös. Featured on the album is Eötvös’ Seven, a memorial to the seven astronauts who died in the Columbia space shuttle disaster in 2003. Additionally, the album includes a performance of Ligeti’s Violin Concerto:

Kopatchinskaja’s violin comes close to disintegrating under the force of her spectacular display and the final orchestral cut-off has never seemed more brutal. Even more powerful is the tortured serenity of the second and fourth movements, helping to mark the concerto out as one of Ligeti’s supreme achievements.
