World Premiere of Matthias Pintscher's <em>Chute d’etoiles</em>, A Roche Commission

Matthias Pintscher’s Chute d’etoiles is given its world premiere by The Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Franz Welser-Möst at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland on August 25. The premiere performance of Chute d’etoiles, composed for orchestra and two solo trumpets, features Cleveland Orchestra principal trumpet Michael Sachs alonside Cleveland Orchestra trumpet Jack Sutte. Pintscher is the sixth composer to be honored with a Roche Commission, an international partnership led by the Swiss bio-tech company Roche in association with The Cleveland Orchestra, Lucerne Festival and Carnegie Hall. Roche Commissions endeavor to link innovation in the arts and innovation in science. The commission offers artists in contemporary music the challenge and opportunity to forge new frontiers in their field. As is customary for Roche commissions, the US premiere of Chute d’etoiles will take place in Cleveland's Severance Hall, on November 8 and 10, 2012, and the New York premiere follows at Carnegie Hall, November 13.

Chute d’Étoiles (“Falling Stars”) takes its title from a work by German artist Anselm Kiefer previously exhibited at the Monumenta 2007 exhibition in Paris. The work’s depiction of seven houses and three sculptures is a meditation on humanity’s divine connection with the cosmos. Pintscher writes, “We are made up of elements of the cosmos. And so we carry within ourselves the infinitely large as well as the infinitely small.”
