Lei Liang from Coast to Coast

Lei Liang is in the spotlight this month with the world premiere of his Bamboo Lights as part of Boston-based Callithumpian Consort's Lei Liang portrait concert, another portrait concert event at Georgia State University, and a composer residency at the University of California, Davis.

Scored for chamber orchestra, Bamboo Lights was commissioned by the Callithumpian Consort and its director, Stephen Drury. The program takes place on February 21 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and also features Liang’s Brush-Stroke, commissioned and premiered by Callithumpian in 2004, and Aural Hypothesis, for ensemble. In addition to the performance, the ensemble presents Bamboo Lights as part of its “Open For’m” series. The “For’m”, which takes place on February 20 at the New England Conservatory, provides a free-form performance and discussion between composer, ensemble, and audience members who are invited to sit within the ensemble.

On February 9, Georgia State University celebrates the Chinese New Year with a Lei Liang portrait concert. The program features traditional Chinese music for pipa alongside Liang’s Five Seasons for pipa and string quartet, YUAN for saxophone quartet, Parts for a Floating Space for saxophone and percussion, and an arrangement of his Lake for two trumpets. The concert takes place at the University’s Center for Collaborative and International Arts. 

Lei Liang recently completed a residency at the Art of Migration festival of the University of California, Davis. The festival, which was held on January 30 through February 3, featured a series of performances including Liang’s Lakescape II by Rootstock Percussion, Aural Hypothesis by the Empyrean Ensemble, and Serashi Fragments by the Calder Quartet.
