Kurt Weill in New PBS Documentary
Dec. 03, 2012

Kick off the new year with Kurt Weill and other legendary Broadway composers by tuning into Great Performances on PBS for Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy. This new 90-minute documentary by Michael Kantor explores the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical and showcases the work of Kurt Weill, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Jule Styne and many others. The film airs January 1st at 9:30 p.m. on THIRTEEN; check local PBS stations for listings.
In performance news, some interesting pairings are currently running in Austria and Germany:
Zaubernacht and The Seven Deadly Sins – Landestheater Linz has paired Weill’s two dance works in an evening that begins with the magical dream of Zaubernacht and concludes with the nightmarish journey of the Sins. Directed and choreographed by Jochen Ulrich and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, performances run through January 30, 2013.
Der neue Orpheus – Theater Regensburg presents a double Orpheus bill, with a staging of Weill’s cantata for soprano, violin, and orchestra, Der neue Orpheus, followed by Gluck's Orpheus und Eurydike. Weill's modern treatment of the Orpheus myth, depicting him as a poor music teacher in a world full of philistines, makes an effective contrast with Gluck’s opera. Peter Lund directs; Tetsuro Ban conducts. Performances run through January 28, 2013.
