Jörg Widmann Featured In Two Nights at Carnegie

Carnegie Hall presents a special showcase of music from German composer Jörg Widmann on back-to-back-evenings: first as part of András Schiff’s recital on May 2 in which the pianist premieres Widmann’s Zirkustänze; and again on May 3 in Making Music: Jörg Widmann. A collection of dances, programmatic on the surface, Zirkustänze employs a brighter, more playful character than his recent solo piano works may have shown, but more is revealed if one looks beneath the surface as the composer explains:

My objective in these dances involving the protagonists of a circus is a simple but profound and omnipresent truth: there is a constant real danger that the tightrope walker will fall. On the subject of our childlike amazement as an observer: it is not our amazement which is false, but the fact that we adults think we are no longer allowed to feel this emotion! And although the tears of the sad clown are artificial, they are nevertheless highly realistic. The Zirkustänze are conceived as a cycle, but individual movements can also be performed separately, for example as encore pieces. These dances are dedicated in friendship to Andràs Schiff.

On May 3, Carnegie Hall presents Making Music: Jörg Widmann, the latest in Carnegie’s extraordinary concert series that offers an intimate look into the work of the world’s leading contemporary composers. The concert features an assemblage of core works from Widmann's chamber oeuvre: Fieberphantasie for ensemble, Intermezzi for solo piano, Fünf Bruchstücke for clarinet and piano, and Versuch über die Fuge for soprano and string quartet. Presented May 3 in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, Making Music: Jörg Widmann features András Schiff, soprano Claron McFadden, pianist Shai Wosner and the Parker Quartet.
