Huw Watkins in Residence with the Orchestra of the Swan

Huw Watkins, one of the United Kingdom’s most beloved living composers, begins his two year residency with the Orchestra of the Swan on October 16 as recipient of the National Composer in the House Award. Created in 2005 and supported by the Royal Philharmonic Society with the PRS for Music Foundation, the award pairs esteemed composers with regional orchestras in the UK as a way of re-establishing contemporary music at the core of the orchestral program.

Composer in the House provides real opportunities for long-term creative exchange between the composer, orchestra member and audiences – and an essential development of 21st-century orchestral repertoire. The RPS and PRS partnership is committed to developing wider opportunities for composers.

As part of the orchestra’s free 5 ‘shorts’ series on October 16, conductor David Curtis leads the world premiere of Watkins’ Britten Short, for horn, oboe and strings. Throughout his Composer in the House residency, Watkins will write several new pieces for the Orchestra of the Swan including a major commission in the spring of 2013 as well as works for community and concert performance.
