Georg Friedrich Haas’s <em>Introduktion und Transsonation</em> Debuts with Klangforum Wien

The inimitable Klangforum Wien premiered Georg Friedrich Haas’s Introduktion und Transsonation on May 1 at the Klaus-von-Bismarck-Saal in Köln, Germany. Composed for an ensemble of 17 players and pre-recorded tape by Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi, Introduktion und Transsonation is part of the wider Giacinto Scelsi Revisited project, taking as its starting point the incredible musical explorations or “sonic documents” as Haas puts it, of this iconoclast of 20th-century music. Haas’s score is a meditation on Scelsi’s unique compositional approach based on improvisation, recording and final transcription. He writes:

The composition is a preamble and sonic transfer of Scelsi’s thinking and his original documents. The succession of note heads is merely a makeshift solution to the problem of setting down a complex of sonic images. As a notational technique, storing such images using electronic media is absolutely equivalent to writing them down on musical staves. Scelsi’s notational procedure is entirely comparable to Beethoven’s sketchbook, for instance… Scelsi has proved that it is possible to compose music without using notational means in the compositional process. In view of the artistic power of his works, we can put it this way: it was not an option, but an aesthetic necessity.

Johannes Kalitzke led Klangforum Wien in the world premiere of Introduktion und Transsonation, which was commissioned by the ensemble with support by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation.
