Fred Lerdahl’s Times 3 Premieres with Peabody Trio; New Bridge Portrait Disc
Mar. 29, 2013

The spotlight is on Fred Lerdahl this spring with several performances and events taking place across the globe. On April 9, the Peabody Trio premieres the composer’s new piano trio, Times 3, at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York. Times 3 was commissioned by Charles and Jessie Price for the Peabody Trio who will perform the work on tour and at the Yellow Barn Music Festival this summer. Lerdahl writes, “The title refers to three instruments, three movements, and three ways of treating musical time. The tone of the work is serious yet as playful as the title suggests.”
From May 18 through 24, Lerdahl is a featured composer at the Beijing Modern Music Festival where his ensemble work Time after Time receives a performance. The composer offers lectures throughout the duration of the festival as well as at the Conservatory of Music in Xi’An. Later this season, Lerdahl will be in residence at the Etchings Contemporary Music Festival in Auvillar, France, along with Georg Friedrich Haas, from July 8-14.
Later in May, Bridge Records releases their fourth installment of Fred Lerdahl portrait discs with Music of Fred Lerdahl, Volume 4. The album includes three newly recorded works – Spirals for chamber orchestra, Three Diatonic Studies for piano, and Imbrications for mixed sextet – along with two re-released recordings of Lerdahl’s Wake and Fantasy Etudes. Performers represented on the recording include Michel Galante and Argento Ensemble, the Boston Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, soprano Bethany Beardslee, eighth blackbird, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Mirka Viitala.
