On December 4, Zen-On hosts the world premiere of five new works for string quartet as part of its 22nd annual concert series, “Groupe des quatre et ses ami(e)s” (The Group of Four and their friends) at Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan Hall. This contemporary chamber series, featuring new works by living composers, has featured a total of 135 composers and 128 world premieres since 1994 when it was founded in an effort to propagate and promote the performance and publication of new music.
This year’s program theme is string quartets, and features new works by Shin-ichiro Ikebe (Strata IX), Tokuhide Niimi (String Quartet No. 4), Akira Nishimura (Seven Fragments and Shadows), Hitomi Kaneko (In-Vision) and Jummei Suzuki (Gewürzwolfie?!) premiered by Quartet Excelsior. All works were commissioned by Zen-On and will be published following the premiere. The concert is broadcast by NHK-FM, Japan’s national public broadcasting organization.
