Festival di Milano Celebrates Morton Feldman

The 2013 Festival di Milano celebrates the music of Morton Feldman this month, with additional performances of music by Vykintas Baltakas, Luciano Berio, and Leoš Janáček. Now in its 22nd year, the Festival runs from October 8 through November 19.

Feldman’s musical craft was proudly American, personal and singular. While drawing inspiration from a variety of artistic sources, Feldman firmly believed in the freedom to explore sound and silence as they unfold over time. The Festival highlights some of Feldman’s most significant compositions written between 1970 and 1986. The opening concert, which takes place in the Basilica di San Simpliciano, features Feldman’s exquisite choral chamber work Rothko Chapel. Other programmed works include The Viola in My Life 4, as well as For Frank O’Hara, Spring of Chosroes, Piano and String Quartet, Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety, and 3 Clarinets, Cello and Piano.

Wolfgang Rihm wrote of Feldman:

Everything Feldman is art… Art is always hard as a bone, great and immeasurable. Morton Feldman is for me the most important composer of the United States. In its unparalleled beauty: a space for his inadvertence. 

The Festival also features a performance by the Stadler Quartet of Luciano Berio’s Glosse and Leoš Janáček’s Quartet No. 2 on November 1 as well as the Italian premiere of Vykintas Baltakas's (co)ro(na) by the Oslo Sinfonia on November 16.
