European American Music Corporation Now Licensing Agent of Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock and Regina in the US and Canada
May. 01, 2013

We are pleased to announce that European American Music Corporation is now the licensing agent in the US and Canada for Marc Blitzstein’s best-known stage works: Regina and The Cradle Will Rock. Based on Lillian Hellman’s play The Little Foxes, Regina is a distinctly American opera that juxtaposes operatic lyricism with spirituals, ragtime, blues, and other popular forms. Like Hellman’s play, it chronicles a wealthy Southern family torn apart by greed at the dawn of the 20th century. Regina premiered on Broadway in 1948 but since then has primarily played in opera houses, including productions at Houston Grand Opera, Scottish Opera, Florida Grand Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Blitzstein’s pro-union musical The Cradle Will Rock famously defied censorship by the Works Progress Administration in 1937 and inspired a 1999 film by Tim Robbins. Blitzstein’s musical allegory of corruption and corporate greed will be presented this summer, July 10-13, in the inaugural season of Encores! Off-Center, New York City Center’s new musical theater series led by artistic director Jeanine Tesori. The production is directed by Sam Gold with choreography by Chase Brock and music direction by Chris Fenwick.
