Alvin Singleton in Residence at Wheaton College; TRUTH in Performance with Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati

On April 13, the Great Woods Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Delvyn Case, performs Alvin Singleton’s Miaka Kumi and Eine Idee ist ein Stück Stoff as part of Wheaton College's celebration of music by African-American composers. Miaka Kumi is a 4-minute concert-opener and was commissioned and premiered by the Atlanta Symphony in February of 2011 to honor Robert Spano’s 10th anniversary as Music Director. The title is the Swahili word for "ten years." Eine Idee ist ein Stück Stoff, composed in 1988 for Hobart Earle and the American Music Ensemble Vienna, was written in memory both of the James Baldwin and Gustav Mahler. The title, “An idea is a piece of cloth,” was inspired by a Baldwin essay and later translated into German by the composer to match Mahler’s mother tongue. The score represents a synthesis of the blues and waltz. Wheaton College also welcomes Singleton to their Norton, Massachusetts campus as Composer-in-Residence for the festivities.

Travelling west to the heartland, on April 29, the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati presents Singleton’s Truth. Commissioned by VocalEssence for their Odyssey Commissioning Program, Truth premiered in February 2006 conducted by Philip Brunelle. The half-hour work for chorus and ensemble of ten players features a libretto by Carman Moore, and is an elegant, minimalist setting of episodic texts describing how Sojourner Truth, African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist, came to be known by that name.
