2015 Yellow Barn Festival Hosts Jörg Widmann as Composer-In-Residence

From July 10 to August 8, Yellow Barn’s Summer Season in Putney, Vermont celebrates “the infinite riches of chamber music” with 23 concerts and features Jörg Widmann as composer-in-residence. A composer portrait of five solo and chamber works is presented on August 4, including Widmann’s Air for solo horn, Eleven Humoresques for solo piano, Skelett for solo percussion, 24 Duos for violin and cello, and the composer himself performing his Fantasie for solo clarinet.

Widmann’s Jagdquartett (Hunt Quartet) receives a performance on August 5, followed by the US premiere of Liebeslied for chamber ensemble on August 6. To round out the festival, his string ensemble piece Ikarische Klage receives its US premiere on August 7 alongside Widmann’s Tränen der Musen for clarinet, violin and piano, and the final concert on August 8 features Fünf Bruchstücke for clarinet and piano as well as Versuch über die Fuge for soprano and string quartet sung by Tiffany Du Mouchelle.

Several additional works by Schott/EAM composers can be heard throughout the festival. Du Mouchelle sings Oliver Knussen’s Océan de Terre for soprano and ensemble on July 17, and Fred Lerdahl’s Waltzes for violin, viola, cello and double bass receives a performance on July 24. On July 30, Wolfgang Rihm’s Dyade for violin and double bass is featured along with Erich Wolfgang Korngod’s Mädchen im Brautgemach from Much Ado About Nothing, and the following day includes a performance of Alban Berg’s String Quartet, Op. 3.
