Dimitri Tiomkin

Biography

Dimitr Zinovich Tiomkinstudied piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and after the Russian Revolution, moved to Berlin, and Paris before moving to the United States in 1925. His first significant film score project was for Paramount’s “Alice in Wonderland” in 1933. He worked with an impressive list of respected directors, among them, Frank Capra, composing scores to “Lost Horizon” (1937), “You Can’t Take It With You” (1938), “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939), “Meet John Doe” (1941), and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1947), Alfred Hitchcock, composing scores to “Shadow of a Doubt” (1942), “Strangers on a Train” (1951), “I Confess” (1953), and “Dial M for Murder” (1954), George Stevens, “Giant” (1956) and many more. He won four Academy Awards, two for score and song for “High Noon” (1952), and best scores for “The High and the Mighty” (1954) and “The Old Man and the Sea” (1958).
