World Premieres of Chamber Works by Charlotte Seither

March brings two world premieres of chamber works by Charlotte Seither: Chercher le chien, for seven players, and Running Circles, a quartet for two pianos and two percussion. 

On March 12, Ensemble musikFabrik premieres Seither’s Chercher le chien at the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, conducted by Johannes Schöllhorn. Scored for bass flute, bass clarinet, trombone, string trio and piano, the 12-minute chamber work is a sonic play in perception, with shifting aural scenery. "I’m interested in virtuosity at the micro level,” Seither shares. “The further I’m away from the sound field, the impression is static. However, the ear gradually discovers these tiny movements. At the end is a warm, beautiful sound surface.” Also featured on the concert is Benjamin Schweitzer’s Anfänge/Netze (Malbork II), for flute, clarinet, string trio and piano.

The second premiere – Running Circles – takes place on March 19 during März-Musik Berlin 2014, performed by Ensemble Berlin PianoPercussion. Written for two pianos and two percussionists, Running Circles blurs the boundaries of sound so that, at times, the listener hears only a quartet – the work is a quadraphonic game of gestures and signs. Seither observes:

Both groups of voices, pianos and drums, join together to form a fractal-mixed sound space in which the resulting [sonorities] can not always be clearly identified as the piano or drums. The piece draws on relatively reduced material, which is dominated by downward, repeated verschränkenden glissandi (‘running circles’). The fusion of individual voices plays an important role with its confluence of lines and colors of the four instruments.
