World Premiere of Vijay Iyer's <em>Meta-Études</em>

On May 10, Vijay Iyer performs the world premiere of his new solo piano work, Meta-Études. The performance takes place at the SFJazz Center as part of a program presented by San Francisco Performances. The program also features Iyer’s Time, Place, Action, for piano and string quartet, with the Brentano Quartet.

Iyer’s Meta-Etudes was commissioned by the San Francisco partners of the law firm of Latham & Watkins in association with San Francisco Performances. The piece consists of a set of generative processes for piano improvisations, which may be performed in any order or combination. Iyer writes:

You must cultivate your own perspective on what constitutes a “complete” performance, and execute it in real time. In particular, you are asked to develop an emotional connection with an audience through these musical acts. This requires rigor, intentionality, and vulnerability. Proceed knowing that nobody has heard this before, nor can they expect to hear it again. It’s all about what you do with the moment and the unknown: shaping and defying expectations.
