World Premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s <i>Sorrow River</i> with Ensemble Resonanz

Ensemble Resonanz gives the world premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s new concerto for recorder and strings, Sorrow River alongside a performance of his Voyage VII for trumpet, strings and percussion on June 14th at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. Hosokawa himself conducts the premiere, featuring Jeremias Schwarzer (recorder) and Jeroen Berwaerts (trumpet) as soloists. 

Sorrow River was commissioned by the Kunststiftung NRW (Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia) for Schwarzer as part of the project “Neue Blockflötenkonzerte.” As with many of his works, Hosokawa incorporates nature as a major theme in his music: 

We have lost the sense of awe against nature, particularly the Japanese, who once lived so closely together with nature. But today that contact is gone. This is also a theme: my own theme.

Sorrow River follows a series of recent works—Fluss (2014), The Water of Lethe (2015) and Stilles Meer (2016)— investigating the musical philosophy of Asia, described by his mentors Isang Yun and Toru Takemitsu as “river of sounds.”
