World Premiere of Tobias Picker's URSULA

World Premiere of Tobias Picker's URSULA

On February 2, Ursula Oppens gave the world premiere of Tobias Picker's URSULA at Merkin Hall in New York City as part of a celebratory concert in honor of the great pianist's 75th birthday. Tobias Picker describes his new work:

"URSULA” is a very short piece with very many notes. It is a fantasy on the opening bars of “When Soft Voices Die” commissioned by Ursula Oppens forty-three years ago and recorded by her twice. At Ursula’s request I based her 75th birthday piece on the first solo piece I composed for her. Ursula has been an inspirational artistic presence in my life since she first attended a performance of a work of mine in 1973 and is one of my oldest friends in the world - like a big sister. Over the years I’ve composed more pieces for Ursula than for any other musician. So, it was a real pleasure for me to compose yet another one - but not the last - for Ursula!"

On February 21-24, the Boston University Opera Institute presents the chamber version of Tobias Picker's opera Dolores Claiborne conducted by William Lumpkin and directed by Jim Petosa. With a libretto by J.D. McClatchy, Dolores Claiborne is a tragic, dark, and veristic work based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.
