World Premiere of Thomas Adès's New <em>Concert Paraphrase on 'Powder Her Face'</em> for Two Pianos

September 8 marks the world premiere of Thomas Adès’s new two-piano version of his Concert Paraphrase on ‘Powder Her Face’. The premiere takes place as part of the Piano Spheres concert series at the Colburn School's Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, CA. Celebrated not only as a composer but also as a brilliant pianist, Adès joins the extraordinary Gloria Cheng for the premiere, with a repeat performance on October 30 at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco presented by San Francisco Performances. 

Concert Paraphrase on ‘Powder Her Face’ recalls Adès’s highly praised operatic work Powder Her Face, which premiered in 1995. The new Concert Paraphrase expands the composer’s 2009 version for solo piano, which transcribed four scenes from the opera, into an exhilarating work for four-hands.

Also featured on the program are Gerald Barry’s Five Chorales from ‘The Intelligence Park,’ and Adès’s arrangement of Conlon Nancarrow’s Studies No. 6 & 7, both for two pianos.
