World Premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth's Piano Concerto at the 2019 BBC Proms
Jul. 15, 2019
On August 28, Ryan Wigglesworth leads the Britten Sinfonia in a Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms performance of his Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Marc-André Hamelin. Also on this program are a set of musical homages: Tchaikovsky’s suite of ‘Mozartiana’ and Stravinsky’s tribute to Tchaikovsky The Fairy’s Kiss. In addition to conducting, Wigglesworth will join Marc-André Hamelin in a performance of Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos. Wigglesworth's Piano Concerto is a BBC co-commission with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, which will perform the work under Wigglesworth's baton on September 20 in Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne.
Of his Piano Concerto, the composer notes:
"My Piano Concerto is scored for an orchestra of modest, Classical size. The solo piano part is neither bravura nor particularly virtuosic. Rather, the work’s three movements are studies in character. The first is a short, intimate arioso; the second, a fast scherzo with a central, gentle trio; and the final movement is a set of variations on a Polish folk melody."
Ryan Wigglesworth will be at the helm for two additional performances at the 2019 Proms, conducting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Glyndebourne Chorus, and a roster of impressive soloists in a performance of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte on August 27. He will also conduct the Knussen Chamber Orchestra in a memorial concert celebrating the life and work of the compositional giant, Oliver Knussen, on September 9 at Cadogan Hall.
