World Premiere of Othmar Schoeck's Updated Das Schloss Dürand

Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck (1886 -1957) dreamed of attaining great success as an opera composer in Germany. Together with Hermann Burte, he created Das Schloss Dürand which premiered in Berlin in 1943 but fell out of fashion after World War II. The original libretto was not strong, but the music is arguably some of Schoeck's best work. Francesco Micieli recast the original libretto (with free use of texts by Joseph von Eichendorff) while Mario Venzago adapted the new text to the music. This project was completed in cooperation with a SNSF research project of the Hochschule der Künste Bern and with the kind support of the Schweizerischen Nationalfonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, the City of Bern, SWISSLOS, Kultur Kanton Bern, and the Stiftung Pro Scientia et Arte.

On May 31, the Sinfonieorchester Bern and Chor Konzert Theater Bern, led by Mario Venzago, present the world premiere of this thoughtfully updated version of Schoeck's opera.

Please enjoy Schoeck's Elegie, op. 36 (1921/1922):
