World Premiere of New Concert Aria <em>The Waking</em> by Tobias Picker

The Waking, a new concert aria for soprano and orchestra by Tobias Picker, based on a poem by the Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet Theodore Roethke, receives its world premiere performance as part of a New York City Opera Renaissance gala event celebrating the life of the late Maestro Julius Rudel. The gala takes place on March 9 at New York's Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The evening, which features a glittering array of opera stars, including David Daniels, Mark Delavan, Plácido Domingo, Christine Goerke, James Morris, Frederica von Stade, and Multi-Platinum Legend Sting, presents several works 
by major living American composers. Picker’s work The Waking receives its first public performance by the riveting American soprano Kristin Sampson and the New York City Opera Orchestra, conducted by Steven Osgood.

Of the new work, Picker writes: 

The Waking, a concert aria on the poem of Theodore Roethke, is my gift to the NYCO Renaissance to celebrate its plan to revive NYCO and its ‘waking’ from an era of sleep. In rededicating its founding mission, NYCO is waking and ‘going where it has to go.’ The voice of the poem is that of NYCO itself—the ‘People’s Opera’—Julius Rudel, countless great artists and devoted patrons in ‘the waking’ of its eighth decade. It is the voice of the audience, the young, the old and future generations ‘taking the lively air’ and ‘going where they have to go.'
