World Premiere of Lei Liang's <em>Trans</em> Performed by Steven Schick

On February 1, as part of a monumental two-night concert event at Miller Theater in New York City, renowned percussionist Steven Schick delivers the world premiere of Lei Liang’s Trans, for solo percussion and audience. The program, titled “Responses”, focuses on the evolution of solo percussion music and features important recent works which create a continuing dialogue with those presented on the previous evening’s concert, “Origins”. 

Trans is a result of Liang’s fascination with the musical representation of environmental sounds. Scored for “solo percussion and audience”, the piece incorporates rocks, which are distributed throughout the audience. Liang states, “the audience forms ‘sonic clouds’ by playing 60 pairs of rocks, in response to the initiation of the soloist and the performance environment.” Through conducting, improvisation, and concentrated listening, the soloist and audience work together to create wave-like textures that are evocative of rain showers, thunder, and other natural phenomena.

Highlighting Mr. Schick’s prodigious musical career, the evening also features a wealth of pieces which he has commissioned and premiered in the past 20+ years and that have become staples of the modern solo percussion repertoire.

Following its first performance in February, Steven Schick performs the work’s west-coast premiere on March 15 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
