World Premiere of Kamran Ince's Oratorio, Jus Soli, in Athens

May. 01, 2021

On May 21, Miltos Logiadis leads the National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation in the world premiere performance of Kamran Ince's Jus Soli, commissioned by the Greek National Opera. The composer explains:

"Jus Soli explores the notion of ‘right of soil’, namely the right of citizenship to anyone born within the territory of a state. The work addresses the Greek War of Independence from the Turkish point of view and tracks its impact and repercussions, bravely confronting the thorny questions that surround every coherent national narrative. In the end, the composer symbolically grants the last, disarming word – ‘love’ – to the sea, the iconic body of water that divides and unites the two peoples and is a symbol of peace and understanding."

Additional performances of Jus Soli take place on May 22-23. This production, part of a tribute to the 2021 bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, is made possible by a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
