World Premiere of Julian Anderson's <em>Van Gogh Blue</em> and <em>Catalan Peasant with Guitar</em> at Wigmore Hall

Julian Anderson sees the premieres of two new works with the Nash Ensemble and guitarist Laura Snowden at London’s Wigmore Hall in November where he is Composer-in-Residence. 

On November 7, The Nash Ensemble of London debuts Anderson’s Van Gogh Blue conducted by Alexandre Bloch, alongside performances of the composer’s The Colour of Pomegranates for alto flute and piano, and Sea Drift for soprano, flute, clarinet and piano, as well as the UK premiere of Ring Dance for two violins. On March 11, the Library of Congress hosts the Talea Ensemble for the US premiere of Van Gogh Blue.

The point of origin for Van Gogh Blue was the collected letters of Vincent van Gogh. These documents are filled with joyous exuberance for the practical considerations of his work, particularly what he will paint next and most importantly what colors he will use. Anderson translated these painterly considerations into sound, drawing on instrumental color throughout the octet, including two “mobile” clarinetists who move throughout the space.

On November 21, Laura Snowden gives the world premiere of Catalan Peasant with Guitar. The title refers to a work by painter Joan Miró in which the dominant element is a vivid blue. This piece, his first for solo guitar, completes a triptych of works relating to the color blue, beginning with his violin concerto In lieblicher Bläue and ending with Van Gogh Blue.
