World Premiere of Huw Watkins's <em>Flute Concerto</em> with Adam Walker and London Symphony Orchestra

Flutist Adam Walker performs the world premiere this month of Huw Watkins’s Flute Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Harding. The premiere of the Flute Concerto, the second new work Watkins has composed for Walker, takes place on February 23 at Barbican Hall in London.

The piece was commissioned by the LSO, with funding from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. Watkins sites Walker’s “amazing sound and control of his instrument” as the inspiration for the three movement concerto. The particular challenges of writing for flute – its shrill high register and the fact that it is easily covered by an orchestra – are deftly handled with delicate orchestration and a pallet of orchestral colors which allow the flute’s sound to come through.

A second performance of the work takes place at the 2014 Vale of Glamorgan Festival by Walker and BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Duncan Ward on May 14 in Cardiff’s Hoddinott Hall.
