World Premiere of Dieter Schnebel's Schicksalslied

Sep. 01, 2018

World Premiere of Dieter Schnebel's Schicksalslied

On September 21, the Prager Philharmonischer Chor and Sinfonieorchester Flandern, led by Jan Latham-Koenig, perform the world premiere of Dieter Schnebel's last work Schicksalslied at the World Conference Center's Saal "New York" as part of the Internationales Beethovenfest Bonn. The performance features soloist Markéta Cukrová, mezzo-soprano, and Franz Mazura as the narrator.

Dieter Schnebel, who passed away in May 2018, was inspired by the famous "Song of Destiny" from the novel Hyperion by Friedrich Hölderlin. In Schicksalslied, he addresses the concept of fate's mechanisms in an optimistic, and at times, playful manner. Drawing on tradition both directly and indirectly, Schnebel incorporates an interpretation of the fate motif from Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Syphony ('thus fate knocks at the door') or the composer's last words ('pity, pity, too late') into the text.
