Norrbotten NEO Debuts Chaya Czernowin's <em>Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of</em>

On January 27, Norrbotten NEO ensemble performs the world premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of for chamber ensemble, led by conductor Pierre-André Valade. The premiere performance takes place at the 2016 Kulturfestivalen Sundsvall in Sweden, where Czernowin is in residence, followed by performances at Norrlandsoperan in Umeå and Acusticum in Piteå.

The work focuses on space, in the form of both sonic dimension and areas of movement. The first part of the piece deals with what Czernowin describes as “very small areas of movement… in these areas repeated restricted materials seem to be dragged on various surfaces.” The piece then evolves to “open the musical space to an unexpected negative space,” wherein negative space “can be seen as a musical continuity which evokes a notion of place, rather than that of an event or process.” 

The 2016 Kulturfestivalen Sundsvall also features performances of Czernowin’s Anea Crystal (two string quartets and an octet), Lovesong (for chamber ensemble) and fardanceCLOSE (for solo piano). Earlier this month, David Hoose leads a performance of Lovesong with Collage New Music on January 10 at Boston’s Longy School of Music.
