World Premiere of Charlotte Seither's <em>Wanting to fly</em> at the Berlin Staatsoper

On January 11, Charlotte Seither receives the world premiere of a new work for soprano, cello and percussion, Wanting to fly. The premiere takes place at the Berlin Staatsoper with soprano Ramina Abdulla-Zadé, cellist Ulrike Brand and percussionist Alexandros Giovanos.

Wanting to fly, part of a cycle of short scenes titled “The Criminals of Mrs A” (Die Kriminellen der Frau A.), is based on texts by Tanja Langer and features additional compositions by Rainer Rubbert,Gabriel Iranyi, Susanne Stelzenbach, among others. Langer's text follows the life of Danish artist Louis Marcussen (1894-1985) who spent 56 years in psychiatric hospitals. Marcussen, who called himself "Ovartaci" (the highest idiot) is portrayed as a symbol of artistry, who even under the harshest of conditions never ceased to produce art and to fight for artistic space. Seither's work explores Ovartaci's attempts to escape his mental confines and find a deeper inner imagination. The 10-minute work is intended to be performed either with or without staging.

Later this season, the Boulanger Trio gives the world premiere of Seither’s figure in space for piano trio on March 10 in Heilbronn, and on April 30 Elke Cernysev leads the Hertener Kantorei and members of the Dortmunder Philharmonie in the debut of Seither’s Inschrift—a comment on Bach's “Christ lag in Todes Banden”, BWV 4, for choir and orchestra—in Recklinghausen.
