World Premiere of Bernard Rands's Folk Songs at Tanglewood's Festival of Contemporary Music

As the Boston Symphony Orchestra settles back into its summer home at the Tanglewood Music Festival, we look forward to the annual Festival of Contemporary Music, which takes place from July 17 through 21 in the scenic Berkshires of western Massachusetts. This year’s program features a thrilling selection of works from the Schott/EAM catalogue, including the world premiere of Bernard Rands’s Folk Songs, for voice and chamber ensemble, on July 20.

Commissioned by the Tanglewood Music Festival, Rands’s new work is a collection of nine folk songs, each in its original language. The composer describes the work as ‘semi-autobiographical’, in that the songs originate from countries that have inspired him throughout his compositional life, including Bavaria, England, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the United States and Wales, his home country.

The opening concert of the Festival takes place on July 17 and features Fred Lerdahl’s Wake for soprano and chamber ensemble, which premiered in 1968 at the Marlboro Music Festival with soloist Bethany Beardslee. The afternoon chamber music concert on July 19 is a cornucopia of Schott chamber works, including George Perle’s 1976 classic Six Etudes for piano solo, Keeril Makan’s 2 for violin and percussion, Hannah Lash’s Friction, Pressure, Impact for cello and piano, and Anthony Cheung’s piano solo Roundabouts
