World Premiere of Andrew Norman's Frank's House with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; French Premiere of Suspend with Orchestre National de France

On February 5, Andrew Norman’s new work, Frank’s House, received its world premiere as part of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's Westside Connections series. The piece, scored for two pianists and two percussionists, pays homage to the work of architectural titan Frank Gehry. The performance featured LACO music director Jeffrey Kahane and Joanne Pearce Martin on pianos, with percussionists Wade Culbreath and Ted Atkatz.

Later this month, James Gaffigan leads the Orchestre National de France in the French premiere of Norman’s Suspend, for piano and orchestra, with pianist Inon Barnatan as soloist. The performance takes place at the Maison de la Radio Auditorium on February 12 as part of the orchestra’s “Two Americas” festival, which also features performances of works by Conlon Nancarrow, Thierry Pécou, and Anthony Cheung.

In January, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) released the premiere recording of Andrew Norman’s Play—a remarkably expansive work for orchestra, which was premiered by BMOP and conductor Gil Rose in 2013. Play was recently featured as Alex Ross’s “CD of the Week”, which Ross calls “a sprawling, engulfing, furiously unpredictable piece.”
