World Premiere of Akira Nishimura's <em>Asters</em> in Tokyo

Akira Nishimura's opera Asters recieves its world premiere on February 17 at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Conducted by Kazushi Ono and directed by Yoshi Oida, Asters's libretto, written by Mikiro Sasaki is based on a novella by Jun Ishikawa (1899-1987) which depicts the fate and struggles of a Heian period artist in a fantastical world that extends into the underworld. Nishimura composed the opera at Kazushi Ono's request, and it is the the first opera that Ono will conduct in his inaugural season as Artistic Director of the New National Theatre. Performances run through February 24.
