World Premiere of Agata Zubel's Piano Concerto No. 2 in London

Nov. 22, 2022

The London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Edward Gardner, performed the world premiere of Agata Zubel's Piano Concerto No. 2 on November 9 at London's Royal Festival Hall featuring Tomoko Mukaiyama as the soloist. The London Philharmonic Orchestra notes:

"A London Philharmonic Orchestra commission, Agata Zubel’s Piano Concerto No. 2 follows her smaller-scale Chamber Piano Concerto of 2018. This earlier piece was also conceived for a soloist playing two pianos: one standard, one prepared. For the Piano Concerto No. 2, the second piano is tuned a quarter-tone lower than concert pitch and spans the gamut of the quarter-tone scale, allowing for material that is both harmonically and melodically microtonal."

Following the premiere, Agata Zubel and musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra gave a performace as part of the Purcell Sessions at Royal Festival Hall. The ensemble performed Zubel's Mono-Drum for solo bass drum and Not I for voice, instrumental ensemble, and electronics, as well as Berio's Folk Songs.

Luke Rinderknecht performs Agata Zubel's Mono-Drum.

Additionally, the SWR Symphonieorchester orchestral prize has been was awarded to Agata Zubel for her piece, Outside the Realm of Time for hologram, soloist, and orchestra, which recently premiered at Donaueschinger Musiktage 2022.
