World Premiere at New York City Ballet Features Thomas Adès’ Concentric Paths
May. 04, 2010
On May 14 the New York City Ballet presents the world premiere of a new work by British choreographer Wayne McGregor, set to fellow countryman Thomas Adès' Concerto for Violin, Concentric Paths.
Making bold usage of careening, treacherously high solo violin passages set against constantly shifting harmonic patterns, the concerto premiered in 2005 at the Berliner Festspiele by violinist Anthony Marwood and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, under Adès’ direction. The composer comments on his piece:
This concerto has three movements, like most, but it is really more of a triptych, as the middle one is the largest. It is the "slow" movement, built from two large, and very many small, independent cycles, which overlap and clash, sometimes violently, in their motion towards resolution.
The new ballet marks the first time Wayne McGregor has created an original piece for an American company. Further performances at NYC Ballet are scheduled for May 15, 18, 20 and 21.
