World Premeire of Mauricio Sotelo's <i>Red Inner Light Sculpture</i> with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s season comes to a close with the world premiere of Mauricio Sotelo’s brilliant new violin concerto Red Inner Light Sculpture. The work, scored for violin, flamenco dancer, percussion and string orchestra, was commissioned by SPCO Artistic Partner and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, courtesy of the “Praetorius” Music Prize.

Mauricio Sotelo was born in Madrid and carries a deep fondness for Spanish culture, which he infuses into his compositions. In regards to the incorporation of flamenco elements into Red Inner Light Sculpture, Sotelo writes that “the raw and incredibly complex sound quality of flamenco singing tells a veritable story by itself.” The work utilizes qualities of flamenco music and vocalizations to illustrate landscapes reminiscent of natural phenomenon such as fire or starlight.

Kopatchinskaja joins the orchestra as soloist with flamenco dancer Rubén Olmo, percussionist Agustín Diassera and Tito Muñoz conducting. Performances take place at the Ordway Concert Hall on June 10, 11 and 12.
