World Premiere of Julian Anderson's Incantesimi with the Berlin Philharmonic; Composer-in-Residence at Aldeburgh Festival

On June 8, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic give the world premiere of Julian Anderson’s Incantesimi, a new orchestral work commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation, Royal Philharmonic Society, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piece receives its UK premiere, also with Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, at the BBC Proms on September 3, and its US premiere with Christoph von Dohnányi leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra on January 26, 2017.

Within the 8-minute work, Anderson uses five musical ideas that orbit each other, “somewhat like planets in an orrery”. Anderson chose the specific sound of the Berlin Philharmonic as inspiration for Incantesimi. The composer states:

I hear a special quality in the way the Berlin Philharmonic colours slow music. I also think Sir Simon Rattle has a wonderful way of carrying and characterising long lines. There’s rhythm and flow. So I decided to write something showing off that.

Also this month, Anderson is a featured composer at the Aldeburgh Festival in Suffolk, UK. Concerts hosted from June 11 through 25 include performances of The Comedy of Change, Ring Dance, In lieblicher Blaüe, and String Quartet No. 2 "300 Weihnachtslieder", as well as the world premiere of Sensation for solo piano commissioned by the festival and debuted by Pierre-Laurent Aimard.

Details on the performances can be found at berliner-philharmoniker.de and aldeburgh.co.uk.
