Wolfgang Rihm's Proserpina Named "2009 Production of the Year" by Opernwelt Magazine
Oct. 06, 2009
German composer Wolfgang Rihm's newest opera, Proserpina, has been named "2009 Production of the Year" by Opernwelt magazine. A monodrama for soprano, chorus and chamber orchestra which premiered at the Schwetzinger Festspiele in May 2009, Proserpina achieved wide critical acclaim and was broadcast twice on Südwestrundfunk Radio.
Based on texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the opera draws its dramatic arc from the ancient Roman goddess Proserpina, whose Greek equivalent is the famous goddess Persephone. Mojca Erdmann, who has recently signed a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, was the featured soprano in the premiere production. Of her performance in Proserpina, the Stuttgarter Nachrichten writes, "one could only marvel at the clarity and precision of her singing. She dominated the performance not only vocally but also through her forceful acting." The premiere performance was conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer, and was directed and produced by Hans Neuenfels.
