Wolfgang Rihm’s Verwandlung 2 in US Premiere in Philadelphia
Sep. 14, 2007
Wolfgang Rihm's orchestral work Verwandlung 2 sees its US premiere September 27 at the hands of conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Premiered in 2005 by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Verwandlung 2 ("Metamorphosis 2") is the second Rihm work to carry the title "Verwandlung," which Rihm says refers to a musical process whose basic unity is subjected to constant change—a common refrain in his music. He states:
"I am fond of forms which develop freely—flux-like forms, form-processes reminiscent of those found in nature. Such forms are rich and plain at the same time. To be pursuing such forms-it is like breathing. Naturally, the 'natural' is part of our tradition. And everyone will want to understand something different by it. There is nothing wrong with that."
The Philadelphia Orchestra's two performances of Verwandlung 2 take place in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center September 27 and 28.
