Lincoln Center's White Light Festival Features Music of Georg Friedrich Haas and Arvo Pärt

Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival features works by Georg Friedrich Haas and Arvo Pärt, including the New York premiere of Pärt’s In principio.

On November 19, the JACK Quartet performs Haas’s “In iij. Noct.” String Quartet No. 3 in a program titled “In the Dark”, The work is a continuation of the composer’s exploration of lighting in performance. Whereas previous works such as in vain and the opera Adolf Wölfi utilize a variation of light and darkness, Haas’s String Quartet No. 3 is to be played from memory in complete darkness for the duration of the piece with the musicians spaced as far away from one another as possible. Haas provides the following comment:

The 3rd String Quartet is composed as a verbal score, with many details and decisions left to the performers. They communicate solely through the sounds produced by their instruments, inviting one another into musical processes, accepting these invitations or responding in kind with an invitation of their own – and always deciding for themselves how far they choose to go down each path together, before turning back.

On November 10, Neeme Järvi leads the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in the New York premiere of Pärt’s In principio. Scored for mixed chorus and orchestra, the work sets a text from the Gospel of John into five movements, ranging from static pulsations to mighty processions. The concert, titled “Word Made Flesh”, also features a performance of Da pacem Domine. Commissioned and premiered in 2004, Da pacem Domine is based on a 9th-century Gregorian antiphon and commemorates the victims of the 2004 Madrid bombings. Additionally, on November 16, Peter Phillips leads the Tallis Scholars in a performance of Pärt’s …which was the son of… as part of White Light Festival’s “Transcending Time” concert.
