West Coast Premiere of Alex Mincek's Chamber Concerto

West Coast Premiere of Alex Mincek's Chamber Concerto

On October 9, Los Angeles’s premiere contemporary ensemble wild Up joins the Colburn Contemporary Players for the West Coast premiere of Alex Mincek’s Chamber Concerto for 13 players. Christopher Rountree conducts the ensembles in a program titled “like a great starving beast…” at Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, California.

Commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture, Chamber Concerto was premiered in September 2013 by Ensemble Linea conducted by Jean-Philippe Wurtz. The Wet Ink Ensemble, founded and directed by Mincek, performed the US premiere in New York City in May of 2014. The instrumentation takes inspiration in part from György Ligeti’s classic Chamber Concerto from 1969.

The program also features Thomas Adès’s 1995 chamber ensemble work Cardiac Arrest, based on an early-80’s song of the same title by ska/pop band Madness. The brief three-minute piece depicts an episode of an overly stressed commuter who suffers a fatal heart attack on the morning train to work.
