Vijay Iyer is Wigmore Hall's 2019-2020 Composer-in-Residence

Vijay Iyer is Wigmore Hall's Composer-in-Residence for the 2019-2020 season. In the context of Wigmore Hall's Beethoven program this year, Iyer will examine the nature of improvisation and, in conjunction with anthropologist Professor Georgina Born, the nature of innate musicality. This month marks the beginning of Iyer's residency, with two concerts on September 22, featuring Iyer in a duo setting with different collaborators.

The first concert, at 7pm, features fellow pianist Craig Taborn. The duo's collaboration has been described as "a challenging dialogue between two innovative spirits who are open to jazz history as well as new developments in the fields of hip-hop, electronica and the classical spectrum". They will perform material from their latest joint album, The Transitory Poems.

The second concert, at 10pm, is entitled The Evolution Tapes  and features Mike Ladd on electronics and lyrics. In this set, Iyer also performs on a Fender Rhodes and with electronics. Ladd, who was described as "the king of the hip-hop concept" by The Guardian, has collaborated with Iyer on several albums, namely In What Language? (2003), Still Life with Commentator (2007), and most recently The Veterans' Dream Project (2013).
