Vienna Philharmonic Performs Johannes Maria Staud's <em>On Comparative Meteorology</em> at Carnegie Hall

On February 26, The Vienna Philharmonic performs Johannes Maria Staud’s On Comparative Meteorology at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium in New York as part of Carnegie’s “Vienna: City of Dreams” Festival. Franz Welser-Möst, who conducted the world premiere with The Cleveland Orchestra in 2009, leads the performance.

On Comparative Meteorology is inspired by the whimsical writings of Bruno Schulz, a celebrated Polish author and artist of the 20th century. The six short pieces that comprise the 18-minute orchestral work were set in motion by fragments of Schultz’s text. Staud describes his encounter with Schulz’s writing as “a startling discovery”, stating:

Using fantastically exaggerated memories of his own childhood, Bruno Schulz creates a bizarre world that is a law entirely unto itself, with a hyper-realistic language of incomparable colourfulness… The work is inspired by my wonderful experience with Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra, and represents my attempt to trace the mysterious world of Bruno Schulz in a musical way, without duplicating or illustrating it.

The work’s unique sound world was received with enthusiasm at the 2009 premiere; Zachary Lewis of The Cleveland Plain Dealer proclaimed, “If Staud's goal is to dissolve time, consider it achieved.”
