U.S. Stage Premiere of George Benjamin's Written on Skin at Mostly Mozart Festival
Jul. 01, 2015
In a run of three performances beginning August 11, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival presents the fiercely anticipated U.S. stage premiere of George Benjamin’s masterpiece Written on Skin. Hailed as a “psychologically gripping, emotionally heartpounding and viscerally satisfying drama,” (The New York Times), Mostly Mozart’s performances feature the original premiere production directed by Katie Mitchell along with the brilliant and acclaimed original cast led by Barbara Hannigan and Christopher Purves. Performances take place at the David H. Koch Theater August 11, 13 and 15, with Alan Gilbert conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Written on Skin, with a libretto by Martin Crimp, is an electrifying story of adultery, jealousy and vengeance, which Alex Ross (The New Yorker) hailed as “immaculate” and “the work of a genius unleashed.” Following its world premiere at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2012 and the U.S. concert premiere at the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music in 2013, Written on Skin has been overwhelmingly regarded as a masterpiece of the 21st-century operatic repertoire and has garnered numerous awards, including a Royal Philharmonic Society Award, Académie Charles Cros Grand Prix and the South Bank Sky Arts Award.
