US Premieres of Matthew Hindson's <em>Septet</em> and Peter Sculthorpe's <em>String Quartet No. 15</em> at MoMA Summergarden

The MoMA Summergarden series presents the US premieres of Peter Sculthorpe’s String Quartet No. 15 and Matthew Hindson’s Septet in July as part of its New Music for New York series. Joel Sachs directs the performances, given by the New Juilliard Ensemble.

Matthew Hindson’s Septet, scored for mixed chamber ensemble, was commissioned by Ars Musica Australis for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows in celebration of Peter Sculthorpe’s 80th birthday. Of the work, Hindson states: 

Septet takes as its starting point some of the ideas expounded by Sculthorpe in his music, including the influences of both Asian and Australian indigenous musics. Furthermore, the piece makes reference to both the lyrical and visceral approaches found in a variety of Sculthorpe’s pioneering works. 

On July 20, the Summergarden hosts the US premiere of Sculthorpe’s String Quartet No. 15. This 5-movement piece is based on a sequence of Simori songs by the mountain people of New Guinea. Sculthorpe asserts that it “does not set out to imitate Simori music. But rather, the work is a personal response to it.” Structurally and harmonically different to the Simori sequences of songs, we hear allusions to the Indonesian gamelan and the rhythms of northern Australia.
