US Premieres of Huw Watkins's <em>Broken Consort</em> and <em>Little Symphony</em>

Composer and pianist Huw Watkins enjoys an active spring in the United States with two of his recent works receiving US premieres in the coming weeks. Watkins’s Broken Consort is given its US premiere with the Stony Brook Chamber Ensemble on April 7 at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. The work, scored for wind quintet, string quintet, and piano, is made up of four pieces, with the first three featuring smaller groups within the ensemble and the final piece building to a climax as every instrument plays together for the first time.

Two weeks later, Watkins travels to Columbus, Ohio to join ProMusica and conductor David Danzmayr in a concert featuring the US premiere of Watkins’s Little Symphony, for string orchestra. The work is the result of a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society and received its first performance by the Orchestra of the Swan at the 2013 Spring Sounds Festival. The US premiere takes place at Columbus’s Southern Theatre on April 18 with a repeat performance on April 19. In addition, Watkins joins ProMusica as soloist for Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2
