Oct. 01, 2017
Thomas Adès’s “dazzling” (The Financial Times) third opera, The Exterminating Angel, has its eagerly awaited US premiere at The Metropolitan Opera on October 26. The composer conducts, with a cast including Audrey Luna, Amanda Echalaz, Sally Matthews, Sophie Bevan, Alice Coote, Christine Rice, Iestyn Davies, Joseph Kaiser, Frédéric Antoun, and David Portillo. Tom Cairns, who composed the libretto in collaboration with the composer, directs.
Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, based on the original screenplay to Luis Buñuel’s 1962 surrealist film El ángel exterminador, was met with immediate acclaim following its debut at the 2016 Salzburg Festival, with The Observer calling it “a turning point for Adès and, it felt, for opera itself.” The Guardian noted the work’s “constantly fascinating” and “powerful” orchestral writing, with The LA Times hailing the opera as “the most important opera of the year.
The Exterminating Angel was commissioned by the Salzburg Festival in co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera (New York), and The Royal Danish Opera (Copenhagen). The Metropolitan Opera's production runs through November 21.
