US Premiere of Thomas Adès's Lieux Retrouvés with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

On February 10, Thomas Adès leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic and cellist Steven Isserlis in the US premiere of Lieux Retrouvés (“Places Revisited”), in a new version for cello and small orchestra, alongside the West Coast premiere of his acclaimed symphonic vocal work Totentanz.

Lieux Retrouvés, originally composed for cello and piano, contours four distinct landscapes described by the Los Angeles Philharmonic as “a rippling figuration growing to a flood of water—a powerfully striding climb up the mountain—the calm expanse of the fields—and the jittery urban dance of the city." The work was originally composed for Isserlis, who gave its premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival in 2009.

Totentanz, a one-movement, 35-minute symphony-cantata for baritone, mezzo-soprano, and orchestra, was written in memory of Witold Lutoslawski and his wife Danuta. It was inspired by a 15th-century frieze, which was destroyed in a British air raid during World War II. The premiere of Totentanz at the 2013 BBC Proms Festival was widely acclaimed and regarded as a ‘cultural event of the first magnitude’ (The Telegraph).

Additional performances this month featuring the music of Thomas Adès include his Three Studies from Couperin with Tito Muñoz leading the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra on February 4, as well as his Dances from Powder Her Face with the Minnesota Orchestra on February 23-25 conducted by Hugh Wolff.
